Natural Ways to Treat a Painful UTI

No doubt about it, urinary tract infections can be really painful. They can come on suddenly, and can get uncomfortable really fast. Sometimes it can take an antibiotic to clear up a UTI, but, there are natural treatments you can try before going to the doctor. You don’t want a UTI getting out of hand and going to the kidneys, which can be a much more serious problem. Here are five natural treatments you can use to treat a urinary tract infection.

Drink Plenty of Water

One of the most important things you can do for your body is drink plenty of water. Chances are there are not many of us that get enough daily anyway. Drinking water not only flushes the toxins out of the body, it can also help to flush out any bacteria and infection that might be in the bladder. If you feel a UTI coming on, drink lots and lots of water. It might make you go to the bathroom more, which could be painful, but that’s a good thing. The more you drink will help relieve some of the symptoms.

Baking Soda

Using this kitchen staple can help fight a UTI. Baking soda is an alkaline, so it can neutralize the acids in urine. Simply dissolve a teaspoon of baking soda into an 8 ounce glass of water and drink. If you can’t handle a lot of sodium, this isn’t a good treatment option due to the sodium content. This is a temporary treatment, so you may have to try other methods, too.

Apply Heat

Often when we are in pain or discomfort, applying heat will help to relieve it. If you are suffering from a UTI, try using a heating pad or hot water bottle. Lie down with the heat over the bladder and leave it there as long as you need to.

Cranberry Juice

This is a go-to, tried and true treatment for urinary tract infections. Cranberry is known to improve bladder and urinary tract health, so pure cranberry juice is the next best thing other than water to drink when you have a UTI. Some people actually find that taking a cranberry supplement helps if they suffer from frequent infections or bladder irritation.

Avoid Triggers

If you are battling a UTI, there are some things you should try and avoid. Try not to drink any caffeine, or eat any chocolate when symptoms are flaring. You should also try not to consume any carbonated beverages, or citrus fruits. All four of these can irritate the bladder even more, and can make symptoms worse. If you can’t avoid them altogether, try to reduce your consumption of them drastically.

These are just some of the ways you can naturally treat a urinary tract infection.
