So many times we forget the most important things when we are prepping. It is so easy to overlook the tiniest details and to underestimate the supplies we might need in a SHTF situation. Have you ever fallen victim to this? Allow me to give you an example. One of the most important aspects of your health is your dental care. Did you know that poor dental hygiene and care could lead to serious heart issues? I had no idea about this until recently when a friend was diagnosed with a serious heart issue and the doctors gave a lecture on the importance of dental hygiene. My friend will even have to take a few days worth of antibiotics before going in for a cleaning. So for the purposes of medical care and personal hygiene we wanted to spend some time on the best dental supplies to stockpile for the next SHTF scenario. If you cannot access a dentist, then having the right supplies on hand could make a big difference in your family’s health and well being.
Toothbrushes and Toothpaste
The first step is stocking up on toothpaste and toothbrushes. There are always tons of coupons in the paper and these items are fairly cheap to begin with. Go ahead and take the time to store a few of these items. For a point of reference, we have a 1-year supply of toothpaste that we have stored. We typically use a tube every 3 weeks so that breaks down to a stock of around 20 tubes. You can also store things like baking soda and water. This will make a paste that can clean your teeth well. Just be careful since prolonged exposure to baking soda is said to weaken the enamel on your teeth.
It’s also wise to learn about alternatives to toothbrushes. The most basic option is a willow branch. These twigs can be used to clean your teeth and they work amazingly well. Each tooth can be cleaned individually and you can even work down into the gums. The great thing about the willow is that the twig is soft and it will leave your teeth feeling very slick and clean.
You can also stock up on mouthwash. If you are not into the idea of storing large bottles and you are trying to save a few dollars, you are in luck. It is very easy to make your own mouthwash and it will not require a lot of work or ingredients. The most basic recipe is to use hydrogen peroxide and water in equal amounts. Another option is to use a mixture of water and a few drops of peppermint essential oil or even cinnamon essential oil. Finally, you can always rely on a water and salt mixture. Salt water is a great cleanser and an easy way to keep your mouth clean and germ-free.
Finally, it’s wise to stock up on oils. If you are struggling with keeping your mouth clean or you suffer from bad breath, known as halitosis, then you might try swishing with oil. This is called oil pulling and many people swear by it to prevent cavities and promote overall dental health. Olive oil, coconut oil, and even sunflower oil are all very good for this process. All you do is swish a tablespoon of the oil for 15-20 minutes. It sounds like a long time, but if you just swish with oil the whole time you shower and dry off, you should be good to go! The microorganisms in your mouth will stick to the oil and they will be easily dispelled. After using the oil just spit it out and brush your teeth. It will surprise you how clean your mouth will feel.
